Key meetings for Permanent Secretary of State in Washington, DC

The Permanent Secretary of State, Martin Eyjólfsson, this week undertook a visit to Washington D.C. for discussions about the bilateral relationship between Iceland and the United States. Trade and tariffs and the two countries‘ cooperation in the field of security and defense were high on the agenda, as were international affairs, including the topic of Greenland and the Arctic and the transatlantic relationship.

Secretary of State Eyjólfsson met with Matt Siordia, Deputy Assistant Trade Representative, and in the State Department Brendan Hanrahan, Senior Bureau Official for European and Eurasian Affairs. He also undertook meetings on Capitol Hill, with Congresswoman Chellie Pingree of Maine (D) as well as Congressman Greg Murphy of North Carolina (R) but they are co-chairmen of the Iceland Caucus in the House of Representatives. He also met Rep. John Molenaar (R) of Michigan and Rick Larsen (D) of Washington. Eyjólfsson also had briefings in the World Bank and met with think tanks, while also paying a visit to the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark where he was received by Amb. Jesper Møller Sørensen and Greenlandic representative Jakob Isbosethsen.
