Air quality

Air quality is generally considered good in Iceland.

The main causes of pollutants exceeding limits are traffic, sandstorms and sometimes volcanic activity. High air pollution can have many causes and various factors can contribute to it.

Through robust monitoring, effective policies, and public education, Iceland can continue to address the health risks posed by air pollution.

Monitoring and supervision of air quality is mainly in the hands of the Environment Agency, which has meters at selected locations around Iceland. The Health Inspectorates of local authorities also play a role in monitoring and supervision of air quality.
