Information about remote exams

Students of Icelandic educational institutions who are abroad have the option to take remote exams at specific Icelandic Diplomatic Missions and, where applicable, honorary consulates.

A list of the Missions that offer this service is available on the website of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Exams are intended to take place on weekdays during the Mission’s opening hours. The availability of this service depends on the capacity of the Mission at any given time.

The process

  • If a booking system is not available on the Mission’s website, the student must send a request by email well in advance to the Missions’s general email address.
  • The request must include the student's full name, identification number (kennitala), the name of the educational institution and study program, and the date and time of the exam.
  • The student then submits an application for a remote exam to the school after receiving a response from the Mission.
  • The school informs the Mission that authorization for the exam has been granted.
  • The student confirms one week before the exam that he/she/they intend to take the exam.
  • The school sends the exam to the embassy at least one working day before the exam date.

The student pays the postage/administration fee to the embassy for each exam that needs to be sent to Iceland by mail. Additionally, the student must pay for photocopying/printing exam materials if applicable.

Other

  • Absences must be reported to the Mission as soon as possible.
  • Identification must be presented before the exam begins.
  • Students are not allowed to leave the exam site until the exam in Iceland has started (unless otherwise agreed with the respective educational institution).
  • Missions are not designed for taking exams. Therefore, silence can not be guaranteed due to general activities in the building. It is recommended that students bring earplugs.
  • Missions do not offer translation services of exams or instructions.
  • Missions can refuse requests for exams due to busy schedules related to regular activities or lack of space. In such cases, it is entirely the responsibility of the exam-taker to find another location to take the exam.
