HRC60 - Iceland statement - Item 7: General debate

Human Rights Council – 60th Session
Item 7: Human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories
Statement delivered by Iceland

Mr. President,

Iceland reiterates that issues dealt with under Agenda Item Seven should rather be discussed under other agenda items.

This Council must, however, discuss the appalling human rights situation of Palestinians, most notably due to the Israeli relentless and unjustifiable military operations in Gaza.

Civilians in Gaza are facing famine, disease and death, not to mention the complete lack of all basic services.

Iceland yet again reiterates the call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the restoration of humanitarian access as well as the release of all hostages held by Hamas.

In the West Bank, Iceland strongly condemns the continued and escalating violence by the settler community against Palestinians and reiterates that under international law, Israel is responsible for the protection of the population of the territory it occupies.

Israel must also uphold the convention of the Rights of the Child, in particular the right to education. More focus needs to be given to the plight of detained Palestinian children and they must be released.

Human dignity and fundamental rights need to be upheld in Palestine.

This Council cannot advocate for adherence to international law only for some. It is our collective duty to ensure accountability and respect for international obligations.

I thank you.
