Statement by Iceland (no 37 of 109)

Mr. President,

Iceland welcomes the delegation of the Maldives and its national report.

In the spirit of constructive engagement, Iceland recommends the following:

1. Abolish the death penalty and implement the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR.
2. Adopt legislation explicitly prohibiting female genital mutilation.
3. Criminalize marital rape.
4. Decriminalize abortion in all circumstances.
5. Ensure universal access to quality sexual and reproductive health services.
6. Decriminalize and legalize same-sex relations between consenting adults.
7. Criminalize all forms of discrimination against persons of diverse SOGIESC.
