HRC61 - Iceland GC - A/HRC/61/L.29: Mandate of SR on the situation of human rights defenders
Human rights council – 61st session
General comment on draft resolution L.29
Mandate of Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders
Statement by Iceland
30 March 2026
Mr. President,
Iceland thanks Norway for presenting draft resolution L.29. renewing the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.
Human rights defenders play a critical role in promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms at the regional, national and international levels. Ensuring their safety and ability to carry out their work without intimidation, reprisals or harassment is essential and an integral part of a functioning international human rights system, as well as the work of the Human Rights Council.
Mr. President,
Iceland remains deeply concerned by reports of harassment, threats, attacks, violence and use of legislation to hinder or criminalize the important work of human rights defenders.
In this regard, the mandate of the special rapporteur plays a significant role in monitoring developments, engaging with states and contributing to a secure and enabling space for civil society.
Iceland therefore joins consensus on this important resolution and calls on all members of this Council to do the same.
I thank you.
